WHAT A MONTH!!!

This month have been very interesting. Now that spring registration is over, it is of course time to begin promoting for fall. My partner and I have been planning for recruiting girls for the Fall semester by hosting events at different schools and attending PTO/PTA meetings in order to bring awareness. We have been working together to identify target sites for fall and to plan to engage in-person with those schools before May when school adjourns. In-person meetings are crucial to cultivate relationships and growth over time.

Our council is especially interested in Title I schools and seeks to increase our diversity and inclusion. However, we will not turn down any school who can host a team and love them all! Most PTO meetings are held at night and if a PTO meeting is not an option, then we schedule meetings with principals and secure their buy-in.

I have been planning to hold at least one public information tabling event during the months of March, April, and May in order to raise awareness. Some ideas include setting up a table after school or in the evening at a public library branch, finding a community festival at which to host a table, etc. We will happily promote these activities on social media and/or distribute fliers to select locations, including area schools. I have been learning so much through my internship but being able to work on my professionalism and planning skills have been very beneficial.

We shall see what next month holds!

Kickin’ It Into High Gear!

Hey Everyone!

Man, what a month it has been at GOTR. Between planning our spring fundraiser,- The Sneaker Soiree, coordinating with a team of 9 other interns, working on our spring 5K, volunteering with GOTR, and creating fun graphics for the team- my month has been an absolute blast!

This past month I was able to place the group of FSU interns in various roles to help them find their strengths and passions within the world of GOTRBB. They are each meant to help us with our Comcast Cares Day- a day full of volunteering in the community that GOTR creates a specialized project for, as well as becoming a member of one other team, such as our social media team, the Donor Gratitude breakfast committee, the 5K committee, and more! I am on each of these committees as well, so having an environment that encourages student involvement has proven to be extremely beneficial not only to my experience with Girls on the Run, but the over all success and growth of our program in general.

Our season finally kicked off this week, and our girls have begin their journey to unlocking their limitless potential. Having the opportunity to be there alongside these teams and watch the girls growth over this next 10 weeks is something that I am really looking forward to, as I haven’t had the chance to be with GOTR for a full season until now. Over these next two weeks I am starting to visit the schools during their practice to be able to see the many different dynamics these teams bring to the table.

March is an exciting month that I am really looking forward to, since many committee begin their workings over the next couple weeks, like the 5K Committee who has the large task of creating a unique and empowering run for our girls on May 11th.

Excited for whats to come!

Progress so far!

Hey guys!

I hope everyone is having a good semester, and finding their internship beneficial. I know that I have been enjoying my time here at the Hub. I have been learning a lot just from sitting in on meetings and talking to people.

So far I have been working on the policies and procedures as well as an operating handbook for new users. It hasn’t been the easiest of tasks but I have enjoyed working on it. Mainly because it has been a huge learning experience about formatting and developing a professional document. I have also been able to be a part of some of the decisions that are being made for the future of KitchenShare which again has been really key for me developing critical thinking and practicing entrepreneurship.

Unfortunately, the open house date has been pushed back, because we had to go back and have the kitchen re-inspected and licensed by DBPR. this isn’t great but there is s silver lining and that is that we are making sure it is being done right this time so that these issues do not come up in the future.

Hopefully, I will be able to update you all by the next post with good news and an open house date. again we would love to have some of your support.

The Grind Continues at The Sharing Tree

The Sharing Tree is still in the process of re-starting back up, but I think in the last few weeks, we have made some major strides in the right direction. We now have a trained and experienced real estate team working with us on finding a new location. We are visiting more and more facilities every week, zeroing in on a place to call home. Along with this, we have found some collaborations that might provide us with a temporary home, if we choose to take this route. I personally have also seen my involvement in the organization grow. I think I just needed the opportunity to prove my worth and skill set to the Board of Commissioners, and I got to do that with my research report on other Children’s Museums in the country. Many of the members of the board told me it was phenomenal work, and as no good deed goes unpunished, I was immediately tasked with more work that would require more time and effort, but I was happy to do so as it felt like it provided an exciting learning opportunity. As of now, The Sharing Tree is still working on their location, but as I said, the process is progressing by the day. Along with this, the other main goal that has emerged is establishing a realistic, strong, well-researched business plan that we can use as leverage in both facility and financial discussions. The Sharing Tree was last operational in 2017, and while the business plan from 2017 is good, it needs a lot of revamping and updates to bring it into 2019. This business plan also needs to reflect the new business model and the new facilities. All in all, the moral at The Sharing Tree and within myself is at an all-time high. We are looking forward to getting back to cultivating the creative and artistic culture within Tallahassee.

I’ll have more updates coming soon

GOTR Spring 2019 Season

Hey guys!

Man what a whirlwind these past couple of weeks have been! I just began my second semester interning for Girls on the Run of the Big Bend. This semester I am serving as GOTRBB’s Volunteer Coordinator, which basically means I am in charge of recruiting and tracking all of GOTR’S 100+ volunteers, all with various purposes serving on different committee’s like the 5K committee, Sneaker Soiree committee, etc.

One exciting part of my job is that I get the opportunity to share the GOTR mission and values with other students in the FSU community. This past week, myself and Carrie- the Executive Director- met with two students in leadership courses on campus that I will be guiding through out their time with our team. Working with other students who share my passion for helping girls to realize their limitless potential makes me truly. optimistic for our future. In the short time that I have worked with them, these students have displayed great ambition and dedication.

I’m currently working on placing these students with their various committees, recruiting running buddies for the girls, and meeting as many members of the GOTR team as possible. This semester is off to a great start, and has already proven to be one that will challenge me in ways that I have yet to experience, but I am excited for it all!

Talk to you soon!

Update From KitchenShare

Hey guys,

I hope everyone is having a good time with their internships. Things here at the HUB are going well and I am really excited to be interning with KitchenShare this semester.

KitchenShare just recently went through a change of leadership and is now being directed by Rachael Reichenbach. She has been great with helping me make sure that I am being as productive as I can be. So far we have been working on organizing documents, contact lists, etc so that we will be ready for the launch of KichenShare in March.

I am looking forward to the next couple of weeks as we get finished up with all the operating procedures and we can start reaching out to potential clients. We now have a list of over 150 small businesses and individuals who are interested in KitchenShare.

As we get closer to the launch date I will probably reach out to some of yall! It would be great to see you guys for the support!

Best,

James Snyder

First Week at GOTR

Hello Everyone,

I am very excited to be interning with Girls on the Run this semester. This organization deals with mentoring and aiding young girls becoming the best versions of themselves through fun mentorship. GOTR’s mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. They envision a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.

What I really like about GOTR are their core values that they honor with each and every young girls that participates through this program. They strive to make each girl to:

*Recognize their power and responsibility to be intentional in their decision making
*Embrace their differences and find strength in their connectedness
*Express joy, optimism and gratitude through their words, thoughts and actions
*Nurture their physical, emotional and spiritual health
*Lead with an open heart and assume positive intent
*Stand up for themselves and others

I will be assisting Girls on the Run (GOTR) of the Big Bend as an administration intern and as an assistant and/or substitute coach for a team of elementary aged girls in grades 3-5 who are participating in the program this spring. The administration intern position is flexible to meet the needs of both the student and GOTR organization and includes research for potential school and community sites, data compilation, community outreach at tabling and other public events, and assisting the Board of Directors with various committee work in order to best implement events such as their Comcast Cares Day project, the Sneaker Soiree, donor appreciation events, and our signature celebratory 5k at the end of the season.

I am excited for what to come with GOTR this semester and I am looking forward to share my experiences with you all as they come.

Best,

Mylourie Dorceus
